Aboca has set up this branch of Scientific Research which is carried out inside the company. Aboca does not merely undertake classical research, studying the anatomy and physiology of plants, classifying their species and varieties. It goes beyond. Aboca in fact has created a Medicinal Herb Garden, a true open air phyto-chemical laboratory managed by a team of experts which:

  • provides plants of identified origin in order to study their adaptation to the climate and the possibility of large scale cultivation and application;
  • provides safe and identified raw materials for the other kinds of Research which the company carries out (particularly Phytochemistry, Preclinical studies, Technological-formulation studies).

Another development by Aboca in the field of Botanical Research is the Vegetable Genomics Laboratory. The mission of this laboratory consists of developing methods (rationalized on specific protocols) based on DNA Molecular Biology techniques for identifying vegetable species for implementation at the Aboca Quality Control. These protocols make it possible to discriminate each botanic species for adulterants or to detect the presence of DNA inside finished products so as to make them traceable.

This makes it possible to comply with an essential premise for safe use of phytotherapeutical products, that is the quality guarantee, which includes exact identification of the vegetable species employed. Observation of phenotypic features only is often insufficient to this end, especially when dealing with transformed material, while the study of the chemical and metabolic profiles sometimes presents limits due to the part of the plant which is used, its stage of development, its origin or the professing the vegetable material underwent. DNA analysis-based Molecular Biology techniques can solve these issues and have a greater discriminating power than chemical tests, affording distinctions not only between species, but also between sub-species and varieties.

Scientific Research methods (particularly those of Phytochemistry and Genetics) are also used by Aboca in the field of cultivation in order to:

  • increase the quality of the drug;
  • increase yield;
  • improve some agronomical features  (habit, resistance against cold, resistance against certain phytopathologies, etc.).

This affords genetic improvement through the selection of plants with special features, for example compact habit, flowering time or others. From these, through successive crossbreeding, one can obtain selected plants with the required features (mother plants). Seeds for agricultural production are taken from the mother plants.
